Overview

The Independent Constitution Review Committee has been established in response to the General Body’s desire to review GAMA’s Constitution and Bylaws to ensure they remain clear, relevant, and aligned with best governance practices.

This initiative provides an opportunity to strengthen the organization’s governance framework while promoting transparency, inclusiveness, and long-term sustainability.

Purpose of the Committee

The Independent Constitution Review Committee will:

  • -> Review the existing Constitution and Bylaws
  • -> Identify gaps, ambiguities, and inconsistencies
  • -> Assess alignment with Georgia nonprofit regulations and governance best practices
  • -> Develop and present recommendations for consideration by the General Body

Committee Composition

The committee will consist of:

  • -> Seven (7) members drawn from the General Body
  • -> An odd number of members to ensure balanced decision-making

Eligibility Criteria

Members interested in serving on the Independent Constitution Review Committee must meet the following criteria:

  • -> Be a GAMA member in good standing with a minimum of two years of membership
  • -> Demonstrate a willingness to collaborate respectfully and maintain confidentiality
  • -> Be able to commit time and effort for six months (April – September 2026)
  • -> Have no active disciplinary actions within GAMA
  • -> Not be a 2026 Executive Committee member or Board of Trustees member, or the spouse of such a member
  • -> Not currently serve in any official leadership or governance role in another Malayalee association in Georgia

All eligibility declarations are made by nominees in good faith, and responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of those declarations rests with the respective nominees. The Executive Committee’s role is limited to facilitating the nomination and voting process as directed by the General Body.

Selection Process

Step 1 – Nomination Period Members submitted nominations for the Independent Constitution Review Committee. (Nomination period concluded with 18 nominees.)
Step 2 – Nominee Information Published Candidate bios and eligibility self-declarations are published on the website for members to review.
Step 3 – Membership Verification Members verify the primary email associated with their 2026 membership in the membership portal.
Step 4 – Voting Process Voting will open for eligible 2026 members once the membership count reaches 350.
Step 5 – Committee Formation The seven members receiving the highest votes will form the Independent Constitution Review Committee.
Step 6 – Committee Work Period The committee will conduct the review and submit recommendations within six months of formation.
Step 7 – General Body Consideration The committee’s recommendations will be presented to the General Body for discussion and voting, as required under the constitutional amendment process.
